About Me

My name is Tommy Blackmon, and I am in my first full year of teaching at BVES, after coming here in the middle of the 2025-26 school year.
I grew up as an Army brat, so I lived in a lot of places before moving back to my hometown of Winnsboro, Louisiana when I was a junior in high school.
I have been in education since moving to the New Orleans area after getting married in 2008, having worked as a middle school paraprofessional before getting my certification in Special Education in 2012 from the University of New Orleans. Since then, I taught inclusion and self-contained classes in middle school in Jefferson and Plaquemines Parishes before coming to BVES.

I have been married to my wife Sharon since 2008, and we have 2 children, a son Ernie, who was Sharon’s foster child before we got married and a daughter, Julia, who is a student in middle school.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Radio/Television/Film from Northeast Louisiana University (Now known as the University of Louisiana at Monroe) and a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Away from school, l like going on great adventures with my family, playing golf, and grilling and smoking wonderful meals.

The reason I am in education is because of my son, Ernie. I was a pastor and worked in video production before I got married and Ernie changed my career path. Ernie is a young man with significant special needs and I wanted to help people like Ernie to gain knowledge and life skills to be successful in school and in their lives after they leave school.
