On Friday, November 5, 2021, third grade students from Boothville-Venice Elementary and eighth grade students from South Plaquemines High participated in Wetlands Day.
Wetlands Day is an Outdoor wetland educational opportunity that allows students to leave the classroom and have a hands-on experience with nature in an outdoor classroom setting. All activities are tied to the Louisiana State Standards (LSS) that students are learning in the classroom.
This awesome experience occurred at the Port Sulphur YMCA and was provided by the Louisiana Sea Grant.
While at the site, the students engaged in four different learning stations. The first station involved soil core sampling. Students got a chance to see how scientists determined changes in the environment by looking at the different layers in the soil.
Next, students explored how different animals have adapted to meet the needs of the environment.
The third station put the students into action on an airboat. They had the opportunity to travel through the wetlands and explore the species that make this area so unique.
Lastly, students examined creatures upfront up close with touch boxes, had lunch and returned to school.
A huge thank you to Ms. Jennifer Cook from LSU Ag for providing such an enriching experience for our students.
