AR (Accelerated Reader) is a computer-based program that will help teachers to monitor each student’s reading comprehension in grades 1-6. Kindergarten students can join in once they are reading completely on their own.
For the pep rally, faculty members dressed up as their favorite book character sharing a little bit about their book, encouraging students to read and find out more! Gaynel Baham, Pete the Cat, was the Mistress of ceremonies and Karen Cook, the Asian character from The Story of Ping explained the ins and outs of AR through PowerPoint. There were songs performed to encourage reading, a presentation of how AR will benefit the students, a list of prizes and incentives for students who achieve their AR goal, performances by the elementary cheerleaders, and an acro performance from members of DTR Fitness Factory!
Before heading home, each student received a free book, provided by Mr. Jim Selin of Books to Kids, adding to the AR excitement!
Boothville-Venice Elementary would like to thank Phillips 66 for the generous contribution to our AR program. Tristan Babin of Phillips 66 attended the AR Pep Rally and threw frisbees to the excited crowd. BV students will be working hard to achieve their reading goals in order to be recognized on the Phillips 66 AR Superstar Wall of Fame!
